Inspiration for WEAVE art festival
A Taiwanese indigenous people
called the Siraya,
with ancestry in Taiwan dating back to 15,000 years ago, used a unique weaving technique for their traditional apparel (Màn縵). This weaving technique is believed to have been introduced by the Dutch when the VOC came to Taiwan in 1624. Along with the weaving technique, the Dutch brought other influences to Taiwan that contributed to the vibrant, diverse culture in Taiwan today.
2024 marks the 400-year anniversary of the VOC arrival in Taiwan. We want to celebrate the cultural exchange between the Netherlands, Taiwan and other nations over centuries by organizing a festival in Amsterdam. The festival name WEAVE symbolizes diverse threads of creativity from many cultures intertwining to form a tapestry of beauty, much like what you will find in Taiwan.
And a celebration naturally includes music, dance, art, food, crafts and storytelling! Afterall, these are the most universal forms of communication between peoples. Join us!
Venue - De Hallen Amsterdam
Hannie Dankbaarpassage 47, Amsterdam
cultural heart of Amsterdam-West
This location was a tram depot for decades since 1905. In 2014 it was transformed into a bustling center for fashion, art, culture, hospitality and crafts.
Architect André van Stigt, in the reconstruction plan, made efforts to preserve traces of the original function. For instance, tram tracks still traverse the central passage, and the original stone car plates on the walls symbolize the main hall behind. With a roof primarily made of glass on the towering gable, De Hallen is a bright, spacious place to spend the day at the WEAVE Art Festival.
